Disney Animal Kingdom Babies

Check here for the latest news about the birth of Disney Animal Kingdom Babies. It is always so wonderful to hear the good news!

March 2008

Two Babies born at Disney Animal Kingdom

Got your attention huh? No, they weren’t human babies! The the two babies I’m referring to are a rare Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra and a baby giraffe.

Kidani - baby zebra born in 2008

The baby zebra is the first of its kind to be born at the Disney World park. He was born on March 8, 2008 and is named Kidani, after the new expansion of the Disney Animal Kingdom Villas, The villas, which are part of the Disney Vacation Club, will be named Kidani Village.

At birth, Kidani currently weighed about 65 pounds and stood just over 3 feet tall! The zebra could eventually reach 800 pounds when it becomes an adult. Hartmann’s Mountain Zebras are native to Angola, Namibia and South Africa.

Kidani was bred through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Population Management Plan, which is a group of zoos and wildlife parks that work together to conserve and breed animals.

Makena - baby giraffe born in 2008The other birth was that of a female baby giraffe on February 29, 2008. Her name is Makena which means "Happy One" in Swahili. At the time of birth, she weighed 118 pounds and stood a little under 6 feet tall! My goodness – I’m glad I’m not a giraffe!! Officials say that she could be as tall as 15 feet when fully grown.

The baby giraffe is the first baby for her 4-year-old mother, who was also born at Disney's Animal Kingdom.

Disney Animal Kingdom Curator reports that the mothers and the babies are all doing well and are expected to rejoin their herds on the savannah at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge in the coming weeks.

I just love to hear when new animals are born and about the wonderful things that Disney does to further conservation. I can’t wait to see the newest additions!
