Disney World Epcot Center
The original idea for the Disney World Epcot Center was that it would be an ongoing world’s fair. A place where the latest technologies and progress could be showcased for all to enjoy. Walt Disney had this idea way back in 1966. He said:
“Epcot will be an Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow that will take its cue from the new ideas and technologies that are emerging from the creative center of American industries.” He intended for it to never be completed – always evolving to keep up with the latest and greatest. Well, since its opening in 1982, Epcot has done just that. It is an awesome place where families can explore the wonders of science and the diversity of our world’s cultures.
Disney World Epcot Center is divided into two separate areas, Future World and World Showcase. Future World is all about science and technology. Each pavilion showcases a different topic in fun and exciting ways. Future World is also where you’ll find some of Disney World’s best thrill rides. World Showcase is exactly what its name implies. It is a sampling of eleven countries arranged around the expansive World Showcase Lagoon. You can take a leisurely trip around the world in one afternoon! Strolling along the wide promenade, you will experience authentic costuming, entertainment, and cuisine.
You might be thinking that your tiny kids won’t enjoy the experience of Epcot. Please don’t think that Epcot is only for adults! Even the smallest Disney fans will enjoy a relaxing day at Epcot. There are special areas scattered throughout the park called Kidcot Fun Stops. This is where the kids can do an activity and interact with Cast Members. There are also plenty of Character Greeting opportunities in Epcot. So strap the little ones in a stroller and take on the world – all in one day!
My family usually visits Epcot on our second day of our vacation, after the Magic Kingdom. My kids really enjoy the fun technology of Future World and love wandering amongst the countries of the World Showcase (and sampling the food!) Our favorite things in Epcot are Soarin’ and the Illuminations fireworks extravaganza each night. We are a huge firework-loving family and sometimes manage to see Illuminations three or four times in a single trip! While all the nighttime entertainment across the entire Disney World Resort is superb, Illuminations at Epcot will always be our favorite. We love it so much that we frequently listen to the soundtrack at home!
Getting to and from Disney’s Epcot Center is sometimes an attraction in itself! There are many transportation modes available, including buses, monorails, boats and trams. Be sure to know the location of the pickup/drop off point for whichever mode you choose. My boys absolutely love the excitement of riding the monorail, but they are just as entertained by the novelty of riding the Disney buses, since that is not something they do at home!
Let’s explore the Disney World Epcot Center!
Upon entering Disney World Epcot Center, you will find yourself in Future World at Spaceship Earth. Be sure to stop at Guest Relations right next door to pick up Park Maps and Showtime Schedules. You can also make ticket upgrades, dining reservations, find out where you can meet the characters, or pick up Disney Dollars or Birthday Buttons. The Cast Members at Guest Relations can pretty much help with any questions or concerns you may have. This is also the location of the Lost and Found.
You can find Epcot tips, show times and even attraction wait times at the digitized Guest Information Board in Innoventions Plaza just past Spaceship Earth.

The Disney World Epcot Center is open daily throughout the year.
Park Hours vary by season and sometimes depend on Epcot Special Events. Epcot also has Extra Magic Hours. This is when the park opens early or remains open late on certain days during the week. Guests staying at one of the Disney Resorts can take advantage of these extra hours.
Live entertainment and fireworks displays are a big part of the day during a Disney vacation. Disney World Epcot Center definitely delivers in this area! Throughout the day there are numerous live performances in both the World Showcase and Future World. Be sure to grab a Times Guide when you enter the park so you don’t miss out on these outstanding shows.
We particularly enjoy the acrobats in China and drummers in Japan. My sons really got a kick out of the JAMMitors in Future World! Try to see some of the shows – you won’t regret it.
Whatever you do, please don’t miss the grand finale of a day at Epcot – the fireworks!! Illuminations: Reflections of Earth is a breathtaking kaleidoscope of fireworks, color, and light all set to an incredible and moving score and lyrics. This truly is a spectacular way to finish a day.
